Day 6: Getting into the swing of things

This morning half the team went on a short hike to a nearby village.

Lydia, Niamh, Alice, Anika, Hebe and Anastasia visited a feeding centre in Mwandika and aided the workers at feeding time and played with the children whilst the rest of us stayed behind and worked on levelling out the playground and and helped out at the local feeding centre, where Anneka, Elizabeth, Megan and Caitlin organised a scavenger hunt whilst Izzi, Freya and I played educational games and songs with the children.

We were reunited for lunch and then spent the afternoon at the brick kilns and doing home improvements. Before dinner, some of us played a variation of a baseball game with the children.

Dinner was an exciting meal of scrambled eggs and sticky rice (egg fried rice) with stir fried vegetables with mandazis for desert.

Stars of the day:
Niamh for her constant resourcefulness and approachability day and night!

Lydia for her communication skills at the feeding centre today and Megan for her constant positivity and enthusiasm (and her ketchup and galaxy chocolate).
Go Megan!

Also a message from Annie who didn't get chance to write yesterday:

  1. Dear Preet et al,
Really happy that you have all settled in well and are contributing to the project and getting involved with the local community. You all seem to be having a great time. The blog is fantastic and we look forward to reading it every night. We have had great weather here the last few days but alas we have just been woken up by a thunderstorm (it is 4am on Friday). Intrigued by the Mandazis you have all been scoffing down and have just looked up the recipe. May try and make them at the weekend now that the world cup is over (German won by the way). Everyone here is well - although we are missing you. We are looking forward to seeing you next week and hearing first hand your exploits. Take care. Lots of love Mum, Dad and Raji xxx.

  2. Megan I hope I don't embarrass you, that as soon as I read that the group enjoying reading the comments I had to put fingers to keyboard.Dad & I love reading the daily blog and we spend all evening checking to see if a new one has been uploaded.Day 5 was 10 minutes past midnight....but it was worth it , it was amazing to see the photo with the group walking with the children the soil was so orange (Just like your newly decorated bedroom.....it looks fabulous) You were holding hands with a new friend and then I looked closer and saw what he was wearing on his feet...nothing.It brought tears to my eyes. The group must be tired and missing home comforts but we are all so proud of the hard work you are doing to help improve the lives of the children there
I'm sure Mrs.M is a valuable source of information about Africa, Mr.T has been sharing fun historical facts about Malawi with his enthusiasm and mad ways that is him.
We are having a heat wave here, temperatures of 28/30 for the last week.So don't forget to look after your self, take your malaria tablets don't want you ending up like Cheryl Cole....( who by the way has married her new boyfriend having only met him for 3 months)
I'll stop now you can take your hands way from you face in embarrassment about me.
I look forward to today's post.
    Lots of love Mum x

    2. Family Bunt are loving the blog - its gone viral! We are missing you Lydia but pleased to see you and hear what you have been doing. We have noticed you have not yet been accredited with any culinary delights as yet..,...must be eating them instead! Without you the fridge at home is strangely full even though its the end of the week ...say no more....Alice returned from Norfolk yesterday and has not stopped talking since. Phoebe broke up today, went to Wagammas for the second time this week and has had a pedicure. The cats are not enjoying our heatwave - wearing black fur coats is not ideal. I am fiercely protecting your wardrobe and your note "under no circumstances borrow by Top Shop green, pink or flowery tops!" I am afraid the pink one with flowers got used as part of a white rabbit costume....but don't panic...I got another one. Not even I could get the chocolate stain out. Love to all. Keep calm and keep laying bricks. Mim, Pic, Phoebs and Al and mons xxxxx

    3. Hi Elizabeth,
We cannot believe that a week has flown by already! We are in the middle of the most massive thunder and lightning storm and the weather has been sweltering. Poppy is not scared and has not done her old trick of hiding under the bed as she has yet to hear it.
We have had a delicious beetroot salad this evening but with Rose away as well there may still be some left by the time you get home! I hope you might bring back some Malawi recipes.
Hope the construction work is going well and you are enjoying meeting all the children.
Have a brilliant time on the safari and look forward to seeing you soon.
      Lots of love,
      Mummy, Daddy, Robert. X
