Pre-departure Information

Pre-departure information!

Dear team Malawi,

We wanted to send a quick e-mail prior to the team departing for Malawi – not long to go now! We hope that your preparation and packing is going well!

Just a couple of last-minute tips:
  1. Please remember that your luggage allowance with South African Airways is one bag/holdall up to 23kg maximum + 8kg for hand luggage. Please do keep to this allowance. It should be more than enough for all of your kit.
  1. Please do not to pack any boots on the outside of the main hold luggage. They almost certainly won’t arrive still attached!
  1. Please also pack a change of underwear, toothbrush (not paste) and any other absolute essentials in your hand luggage (medication, anti-malarial tablets), just in case any main bags go missing on the flight. It is unlikely, but best to be safe. We would also recommend that team members wear their boots on the journey, as this saves on weight in their luggage and means that if your bag is delayed somewhere that you will still have a pair of good, comfy shoes to wear.
Keeping in touch: We have set up blogs for each group travelling overseas with us, to keep parents up to date with what the teams are up to. You can find the Tonbridge Grammar School team blog here and you can comment on posts and (hopefully!) photographs. We will be updating the blog as often as possible with news from the team – at least every 2 days. You can also view any updates on our website. Please feel free to pass on these links to anyone else who you think would like to stay up to date with the team’s activities.
Trip Information: You can find specific trip information and documents here This page has some key documents (itinerary, trip information pack, risk assessments) plus general Inspire information and our Emergency number – also detailed below.
Airport Departure: As you know the team will be flying with South African Airways from London Heathrow via Johannesburg to Blantyre. We will update the blog to let you know when the team have all arrived safely.
On arrival in Malawi George and Gemma, the Inspire Group Leaders, will be there to meet the team. The group will then be transferred to Fisherman’s Rest Lodge in Blantyre, where they will have lunch and then do some in-country orientation.

If you need to contact a member of the team urgently at any point please make a note of the Inspire 24 hour EMERGENCY number: +44 (0) 7531 872 658This number is manned in the UK 24 hours a day in case of any emergency situations where you need to contact a member of the team urgently.

For all other queries, please use the Inspire office number: 01273 249 543.
If you have any last minute questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Otherwise we hope you have an incredible time and look forward to keeping your family and friends updated throughout the group’s time in Malawi.

Best wishes,
